Autumn in New England

South from St. Johnsbury
Some of the most photographed villages of Vermont are located southwest of St. Johnsbury. These are the picture postcard and calendar shots. If possible, try to fit this tour into your schedule. The white clapboard homes and white steepled churches in this area look best framed in fall foliage from a high vantage point
You can do this tour as a day trip from St. Johnsbury or part of your journey southwest (the Grant Tour and Highlights itineraries described earlier follow this route) into the heart of Vermont. You might want to spend the day photographing these little villages and then stop in the Barre/Montpelier area overnight.

Peacham
From St. Johnsbury drive west on Route 2 to Danville and then turn south to Harvey. If you want to add another covered bridge to your collection, take a short detour east to South Danville where you'll find the Green Bank Hollow  bridge across Joe's Brook.
Continue south to Peacham, one of the most photogenic villages in Vermont and probably the most photographed during the fall foliage season. You will want to make a stop at the Congregational Church and visit the cemetery where you can photograph the monuments as well as the fine views.

The Topshams and East Corinth
Then continue south through a series of pretty, picture-perfect villages including South Peacham, Groton, East Topsham, and Topsham Four Corners. Another frequently photographed village is East Corinth.

Waits River and East Orange
When you join Route 25, head northwest toward Barre. You will pass through the small photogenic village of Waits River. In the village of Waits River turn west at the church and go up a small hill for the classic view of the village that has graced many a calendar. Just after Waits River, turn left for a short detour to East orange, another outstanding village.
Return to Route 25 and continue northeast on Route 302 to Barre, probably a good place to stay for the night. If you have time, take some pictures of the state capital building, probably the most photographed building in Vermont.
